Barrier First: Why Aggressive Routines Backfire

Redness, stinging and new sensitivity usually mean over-treatment, not under-treatment.

The lipid barrier controls water loss and keeps irritants out. Stacked actives strip it, and every product then stings.

Signs of a compromised barrier

Tightness after cleansing, burning from previously tolerated products, persistent flushing and rough texture.

The reset

Pause all actives for two weeks. Gentle cleanser, ceramide moisturizer, SPF. Nothing else.

Reintroduce one at a time

Add one active at reduced frequency and hold for two weeks before adding another. Most patients need fewer products than they own.

Frequently asked

How long does barrier repair take?

Two to four weeks of simplification is usually enough for noticeable recovery.

Should I stop retinoids entirely?

Temporarily during a reset, then reintroduce at lower frequency with your provider's guidance.
